Results of Cycle 6 of the Active Transportation Program

Cycle 6 of California’s Active Transportation Program (ATP), staff recommendations for which were announced on October 20, was an exceptional one.  An infusion of funds from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), brought the baseline of funds from the $444 million per cycle that existed…

ATP Cycle 6 Closed and Augmentation

The deadline for ATP Cycle 6 passed on June 15. 434 applications were received, 20 fewer than in Cycle 5. That drop is much smaller than the decrease of 100 from Cycle 4 to Cycle 5, however, so we are cautiously optimistic that the size of the applicant pool is beginning to stabilize. According to…

More Funding is Needed for the Active Transportation Program

After the most competitive cycle yet of the Active Transportation Program, we and our partners in mobility and environmental justice advocacy are pushing for a $1 Billion augmentation to Cycle 5 from the State General Fund, which is currently benefiting from an unprecedented one-time surplus. This augmentation would be sufficient to fully fund all applications…

Statewide News: SB 1 Projects Approved

Earlier this month, the California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved allocations for a bevy of projects programmed in four SB 1-supported programs. As Streetsblog describes, many of those projects, which were brought to the Commissioners by CTC staff, are emblematic of discredited highway expansion planning. Even in some cases in which the projects provide transit options,…

Two Ballot Measures for Your Consideration

We urge everyone to vote! There are two ballot measures up for consideration in California this year that we wanted to call your attention to. Newsom Focuses on Electric Vehicles to Alleviate Climate Change

Last month, Governor Newsom signed Executive Order N-79-20, which calls for the end of all sales of new fossil fuel vehicles by 2035. While we celebrate any move away from gas-powered vehicles, we share the belief of our partner CalBike that this executive order focuses far too much on what cars use for their power source, rather…
